There are many amazing Lego Sets. Some are large and some are small, but one particular set was just the perfect size: The Lego Star Wars 75078 Imperial Troop Transport Battlepack. This set is the perfect size, carrying multiple troops while looking swoosh-able, all while still fitting in the palm of my hand.
Owning the 2015 Imperial Troop Transport Set
If you noticed the amazing usefullness of this set, then you probably own a copy of this set, plus a few extra. In my case, I own three. I was almost about to buy a fourth to complete my large fleet of Imperial troop transports, but alas, I decided that a squad of 12 stormtroopers should be enough for most cases, and I really didn't have a right or need to buy more. I just loved this set!
However, after looking at and using the set for a while, and knowing that the set was only a scaled version of the actual troop transport, I decided that this set could use an alternate build to be more accurate. I then noted that all of the additional pieces that I would need were native to the set itself. This means that no new pieces would be needed, except a second copy of the set. My eyes then fell on my second copy of the set; It would additionally be included in this Alternate build.A Complete Multi-Set Alternate Build
Using the pieces of the two identical sets, I designed a larger Imperial Troop Transport, capable of carrying six troopers, plus two that poke their heads outside the cockpit.
This end result contained all of the pieces of the two sets used to make it. There were no extra leftover parts. This is nice for two reasons:
- There is no concern over losing track of parts if the set is kept intact, or if sections of its exploded state are kept near to each other
- The set is easy to rebuild if its parts are kept together
- Addendum: It is a trophy to how one can make a good-looking model out of two different sets while having no extra parts. And that's why I like making these models!
Cargo Storage like in the older set
In this new rendition of the set, I made sure to include the fun little features of the original set, and then add some new. Included in-between the troop deployment spots, there are two removable cargo boxes. They can hold studs, like in the original set, or they can include binoculars or coaxium. Either way, they are quite useful, and easy to deploy.
A Cockpit for Two Minifigures.
It's a little hard to show with photos, but this speeder has a cockpit. There are two possible configurations of it.
The first configuration places the extra pieces from the alternate build in the center of the cockpit. Then, the pilots can stick their heads out to both sides through the cockpit side-doors. I find this method easier than moving figures in and out of the cockpit, and so I am content to have the pilot's heads visible, as it also makes them easier to remove.
The second configuration gets rid of the extra pieces that are in the cockpit, and instead utilizes that middle space as the seating area for one minifigure to pilot the speeder. Both side doors of the cockpit can then be more completely closed to shield the pilot from enemy laser fire.
A more visual example of the cockpit, made while I was creating the instructions for this model (yes, it has instructions, yay!), shows the cockpit interior without the extra pieces in the middle:
Larger Laser Cannon, and an Aft Missile Rack
In the making of this Multi-set Alternate Build, I made sure to include a larger turret. Thus, I found that the previous missile turret would need to place its missiles elsewhere, so I made a missile rack that can be placed on the back of the speeder. It might be useful as a target, in case anyone wants to blow the speeder up.
A Whole New, and Larger Speeder Model
Overall, this model makes an impressive display piece with its multiple figures loaded up. But, with the figures removed and the middle cargo boxes removed, you still have a very opulent-looking model. Below is shown a rendering of that view.
Building Instructions
I made sure to include instructions for this model, as I know that I am not the only one with the ingredients required for it. The instructions are shown below. The only pieces required are those that are found in exactly two of the original 75078 Lego Star Wars Troop Transport Set.
Enjoy the model! It will make the Imperial Troop Transport fleet look quite impressive!
